Perry was born in Chicago to the actors Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both the two episodes she appeared on Roseanne. Perry was forbidden to start acting in front of her family until an adulthood stage, because they were concerned about the strain it might result in. Perry stated she felt shy to act at the age of 16, but she began acting in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry started her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, getting small parts in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry return to California to work as an actress in the theater. Perry was a part of the cast with her mother as part of The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. The show featured her father Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry played a lead role in nine episodes in 2016 of ABC's drama The Family. Perry was also featured in an appearance on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. The actress also portrayed her young Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon which was a CBS spin-off of The Big Bang Theory. Despite her family link to the character she received the part through an audition.
